Position Overview: The Senior Educational Technologist (Sr. ET) will support faculty using the edX platform. The Sr. ET will work with faculty in multiple disciplines and serve as the technical/platform expert for MOOC course development teams and other online learning initiatives across campus.

The Sr. ET’s primary responsibility is to obtain and maintain technical expertise in using and extending the edX platform. This expertise will be needed for the training of MIT faculty/staff/students to best utilize the edX platform to meet their pedagogical needs. Other responsibilities will include working with MIT course teams, faculty, and edX partners to identify, report, and resolve technical issues, and staying abreast of changes between edX platform releases and communicating these changes to stakeholders as a feature expert. The Sr. ET will also be responsible for producing end-user documentation, managing cross-team and cross-department projects and initiatives, and piloting/evaluating new MOOC technologies and development processes with minimal supervision and reporting out to stakeholders. The Sr. ET will work with a range of technologies as required for course development and must be prepared to learn new skills quickly as necessary. The ideal candidate enjoys tinkering with and hacking existing technologies to develop creative tools that support instructional design best practices and research. The MITx team works on multiple projects concurrently and adjusts to changing priorities swiftly, so the ideal candidate should be adaptable and willing to shift tasks as necessary.

Required:  A minimum of four years’ work experience in online learning support, website development/support, or a similar role; a working knowledge of standard web markup languages and best practices (HTML/XML/CSS) with additional JavaScript and/or Python experience strongly preferred; very strong problem solving and debugging skills; excellent communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with teammates, faculty, staff, vendors, and business partners; flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing platforms and processes. Training experience, a strong interest in online education, and/or experience in higher education are desirable.


This is a temporary, one-year position renewable on an annual basis.
