The mission of the Disciplinary Experts in Learning Technology and Applications (MIT DELTA) is to extend MIT’s educational reach by combining disciplinary expertise with innovative digital strategies to deliver high-quality learning experiences to diverse audiences worldwide.

About the DELTA team

The DELTA team comprises instructional staff and education postdocs from across academic departments and disciplines at MIT. From biology to physics, materials science to philosophy, DELTA members both lead and collaborate on a wide variety of educational projects for both MIT students and Open Learning’s global community of learners. The DELTA team combines expertise in science, engineering, and the humanities and social sciences with extensive knowledge of digital learning best practices, enabling members to support departmental digital learning solutions while also serving as subject matter experts and departmental liaisons within Open Learning.

The team grew out of the former MIT Digital Learning Lab (DLL). The DLL (now DELTA) delivered substantial successes—launching and sustaining high-quality Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), partnering with departments to carry out their educational mission, serving as change agents, modernizing General Institute Requirement courses, and rapidly prototyping digital learning solutions. In recognition of the rapidly evolving online educational landscape, the group has refocused itself with an updated name and mission.

DELTA goals
  • Prioritize high-impact educational work that reaches a large number of learners.
  • Inform and provide insights for learning technologies such as AI tutors and personalized learning that are critical to MIT Learn.
  • Create a process and pipeline for fast and responsive educational content.
  • Provide a strong connection between MIT departments and Open Learning.
  • Enhance teaching in the General Institute Requirements, the core required courses for MIT undergraduates.
  • Enable collaboration across departments, labs, and centers, as well as within Open Learning.
  • Communicate science effectively to a global audience.
  • Grow with the educational changes and needs at MIT.

The DELTA team is working on a new series of projects that aim to share exciting science, engineering, and humanities topics in an accessible format to a wide variety of online learners. These MIT Learn projects will include short-form video, podcasts, games, and a new live online series called Open Seminar. Check back soon for details!
