As MIT ramps up video recording for classes, in studios, auto-lecture capture classrooms, lightboard rooms and regular classrooms, it’s important to remember that the new normal is different than before the pandemic.  MIT’s top priority is the health and well-being of our community.

Accordingly, we have in place the following guidelines for on-campus filming of classes:

  • All MIT policies and processes, including those required to access campus and allocated hours on campus, will be followed.
  • Studio filming will be booked via the appropriate entity, e.g., MVP or MITx.
  • Each room may be scheduled for one shoot per day
  • Only one instructor and one videographer / producer may come in for each shoot, so that there are no more than two people in the room at a time.
  • Prior to shooting:
    • All MIT policies and processes, including those required to access campus, will be followed
    • Masks will be worn by all people at all times
    • The videographer / producer will wear gloves
    • Steps will be taken to minimize the amount of time the instructor and videographer spend in the room together: The videographer will perform set-up alone, in advance, including room lighting
    • When in the room together, a minimum of 6 feet distance will be maintained between the instructor and the videographer
  • During shooting:
    • Once everything is set up, the videographer will leave the room.  Any monitoring will be done from outside the room.
    • After the instructor is alone in the room, the mask may be removed for filming
    • If the classroom has more than 200 seats; and if a 30 foot distance can be maintained between the presenter and the videographer; and if there is no option for robotic or remote capture, only then the videographer may remain in the room, at a >30 foot distance, and film an un-masked presenter.  All other above guidelines will pertain.
  • After shooting:
    • The presenter’s mask should be re-fitted.
    • If there is no videographer, the below should be done -- if available -- by the presenter.  If there is a videographer, the presenter should leave the room before the videographer re-enters to do the below.
      • if there is an air filter in the room, this should be switched on
      • If there is a UV disinfecting light, this should be switched on
      • Surfaces should be wiped down with disinfecting wipes
      • The room should remain unoccupied overnight
